Independent Trustees

The RS Funds' Board of trustees oversee the RS Funds, including the investment advisory services provided by RS Investments. The RS Funds' Chief Compliance Officer reports directly to the Board of trustees. The seven "disinterested" or independent trustees, who have no affiliation with RS Investments, are Judson Bergman, Dennis M. Bushe, Kenneth R. Fitzsimmons, Jr., Anne M. Goggin, Christopher C. Melvin, Jr., Gloria S. Nelund, and John P. Rohal. Below are brief professional biographies for each of them. They can be contacted at trustees@rsinvestments.com.

Judson Bergman

Judson Bergman has served as an independent trustee of the RS Funds since 2006. Mr. Bergman is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Envestnet Asset Management, a provider of back-office solutions for financial advisors and the wealth management industry. He leads Envestnet's management team, guides Envestnet's strategic alliances, and manages the implementation of Envestnet's business plan.

Until 1999, Mr. Bergman was the Managing Director, Nuveen Mutual Funds, for The John Nuveen Company, a diversified investment manager. In this role he was responsible for the profitable growth of Nuveen's mutual fund business and was a member of Nuveen's Investment Management Committee. Under his guidance, Nuveen's mutual fund business experienced significant increases in sales, net flows, and profitability. Prior to this role, Mr. Bergman directed Nuveen's Corporate Development activity from 1993 to 1997 where he managed the firm's expansion into equities, initiated the development of Nuveen's separate account business, led Nuveen's 1997 acquisition of Rittenhouse Financial Services and 1996 merger with Flagship Resources, and helped form Nuveen's alliance with Institutional Capital Corp. From 1985 to 1992, he developed and managed Nuveen's merger and acquisition advisory business.

Mr. Bergman received a B.A. in English from Wheaton College, and earned his M.B.A. in Finance and Accounting from Columbia University.

Dennis M. Bushe

Dennis M. Bushe became an independent trustee of the RS Funds in 2011. He has 30 years of experience in financial markets, concentrating in fixed income investments.

Mr. Bushe was formerly Managing Director and Chief Investment Risk Officer for Prudential Financial. In this capacity, he was responsible for the oversight of market, credit, and sovereign risks for Prudential's proprietary invested assets, globally. Prior to this role, he was the Managing Director in charge of taxable fixed income investments for Prudential Mutual Funds and the unit's Chief Fixed Income Strategist. While at Prudential, he also served on the board of Prudential Global Funding, the firm's derivatives subsidiary, and on the Investment Oversight Committee for Prudential's pension, health and welfare benefits plans. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the research staff at the National Bureau of Economic Research, and served on the economics faculty at New York University.

Mr. Bushe holds a Ph.D. in Economics and a Masters of Urban Planning from New York University, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Kenneth R. Fitzsimmons, Jr.

Kenneth R. Fitzsimmons, Jr. has served as an independent trustee of the RS Funds since 2007. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University in international relations in 1968, and a master of business administration from the Wharton School University of Pennsylvania in 1971. Mr. Fitzsimmons was formerly a founding partner, member of the Executive Committee, Managing Director, and Head of Equities at Robertson Stephens, an international investment banking firm specializing in growth companies headquartered in San Francisco. He is a trustee of Brown University and a Director of the Brown Sports Foundation.

Mr. Fitzsimmons is also a member of the following: Board of Directors, Napa Valley Health Care Fund; Investment Board, Napa Valley Health Care Fund; Board of Trustees, Sonoma Academy; and Investment Committee, Alesco Global Advisors.

Anne M. Goggin

Anne M. Goggin has served as an independent trustee of the RS Funds since 2006 and as chairman since 2007. Ms. Goggin is currently an attorney at law in private practice. Ms. Goggin's career has focused on the financial services business, with a particular emphasis on the issues relating to investment companies, investment advisers, broker-dealers and other financial products and services. During a period of over two decades, Ms. Goggin held a variety of positions at Metropolitan Life Insurance Company/New England Life Insurance Company. As General Counsel (New England Life) and as Chief Counsel - Individual Business at MetLife, she was responsible for providing legal advice and representation on all matters pertaining to MetLife's Individual Business unit. At MetLife, she also served as Chairman of the Board of the Metropolitan Series Fund, Inc., a $25+ billion investment company, and as Chairman, President and CEO of MetLife Advisers, the investment adviser and fund administrator for the Metropolitan Series Fund.

Ms. Goggin received a B.A. in English from Regis College, and earned a J.D. from Boston College Law School.

Christopher C. Melvin, Jr.

Christopher C. Melvin, Jr. has served as an independent trustee of the RS Funds since 2007. Mr. Melvin is the founder and chairman of Melvin & Company LLC and LaSalle Capital, LLC. He was also the founder and chairman of Commonwealth Financial, LLC. Mr. Melvin began his career working in the trust and clearing areas of the securities industry then on to trading both options and equities.

Mr. Melvin received a B.A. in Political Science from American University. He is also a member of the National Association of Securities Professionals and currently sits on the Board of Boston Stock Exchange.

Gloria S. Nelund

Gloria S. Nelund has served as independent trustee of the RS Funds since 2007. Ms. Nelund has over 29 years of experience in the Asset and Wealth Management businesses. Her experience includes six years with Deutsche Bank/Scudder Investments, from where she retired as Head of Deutsche Bank's U.S. Private Wealth Management Group with $51 billion in client assets and over $170 million in annual revenue.  She was a Member of Deutsche Bank's Global Executive Committee for Private Wealth Management and a Senior Partner of DB Group. Prior to that, Ms Nelund spent 16 years at Bank of America/Security Pacific Bank in various executive management positions including three years as President and CEO of B of A Capital Management, Inc., a $35 billion institutional investment management subsidiary managing mutual funds, public funds, common trust funds, and corporate funds, two years as President and CEO of InterCash Capital Advisors, Inc., a $15 billion institutional investment management subsidiary, five years as Manager of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for Global Asset Management, and six years in other executive management positions within B of A.

Currently Ms. Nelund is CEO, co-founder, and Board Member of TriLinc Global, a global financial services company that provides capital to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the developing world through an offering of unique triple bottom line investments.

Ms. Nelund attended University of Dayton and graduated from the Sales and Marketing Executive Program at University of Virginia, Colgate Darden Graduate School.

John P. Rohal

John P. Rohal has served as independent trustee of the RS Funds since 2008. Mr. Rohal is the Managing Member of Makena Capital responsible for Global Public Equity. Makena Capital manages a private endowment approaching $13 billion in assets invested globally in a highly diverse range of assets.

Prior to joining Makena Capital, Mr. Rohal was Chairman, Managing Director and Chairman of the Portfolio Strategy Committee at EGM Capital, a San Francisco based asset management firm. Previously he worked at Robertson Stephens, where he was the global research director for eight years and was a member of the executive and management committees. While at Robertson Stephens, Mr. Rohal built the research department from 13 senior analysts to 55 plus a large support staff, covering all of the major growth industries. Prior to Robertson Stephens, Mr. Rohal spent a decade at Alex. Brown & Sons, where he was managing director and co-head of the Technology Research Group. During that time, he covered the communications and networking industries and was a member of the Alex. Brown & Sons Commitment Committee and the selective Investment Opportunities Committee. Prior to Alex. Brown & Sons, Mr. Rohal had a 14-year career in leadership positions at Honeywell, Pfizer, and Martin Marietta, beginning in 1969 with a sales position at IBM.

Mr. Rohal received a B.S. from West Virginia University, and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania. He also attended law school at Georgetown University.
